When Ford launched their mass-market small car in 1968, it became a success overnight. From a basic 1100 to a high performance Twin Cam, in both two and four door saloon versions and even a three-door estate, there was a car to suit everyone.
With its superb gearbox, rear wheel drive layout and sporty handling the 1300 is fun to drive although the brakes on the other hand have been known to cause problems.
The MK I is roomy inside and cheap to run. With age and high mileage the engines tend to smoke and gearboxes can become difficult to engage, but this all adds to the charm of the Mk I. Before buying one, check the floor, sills and suspension turrets under the bonnet for rust.
For a mere £1,500 you can buy a saloon Mk I in pristine condition, £800 will get you a model in a usable state. If you have nearer £2,000 to spend, you should be able to splash out on a sportier GT model.
