Launched at the Geneva Motor Show in 1961 the E-Type was originally powered by a 3.8 litre XK engine and could be purchased as a coupe or two seater roadster. Its production ran for 14 years with over 70,000 models being made during that time.
In its time, the E-Type was quite technically advanced with a top speed of 150 mph, a double overhead cam engine, four wheel disc brakes and fully independent rear suspension. At around £2,000 for a fixed head coupe it was half the price of its main rivals Ferrari and Aston Martin.
With its prestigious racing heritage, Jaguar was able to apply some of its racing innovations to the E-Type. In fact, the car has direct links to the XK120, the C-Type and the D-Type, which was so successful in the Le Mans 24-hour race in 1955, 56 and 57.
The E-Type is considered by many to be the most memorable car of the last century. One of the great things about the car is that you can still get parts for it today, be it a new oil filter or more major parts for a full restoration project.
The E-Type caters for most people's pockets. You can pay £75,000 for a re-engineered Eagle E-Type Roadster or well under £10,000 for a Series 2, 2+2. Expect to pay a premium for Series 1 cars, which are deemed best by the purists. If you are looking for a Roadster you can expect to pay in excess of £40,000, with a Coupe costing about £10,000 less. For a Series 1 or 2 Fixed Head two seater you can expect to pay £20,000 for a good car. V12s have always been popular, with the best Roadsters making £40,000.
