When you think of a Mini Cooper it evokes memories of the swinging 60s. Alec Issigonis originally designed the Mini in 1959 and with a length of just over 10 feet and being able to seat four people plus their luggage, the basic model would have set you back less than £400.
John Cooper, the owner of a very successful Grand Prix racing team, then further developed the car in 1961 and before long the Mini became a first rate rally car. The Mini Cooper was soon the car to have and celebrities such as the Beatles and Peter Sellers quickly added one to their collections. When the Mini Cooper S, which was produced in 1963, appeared in the film The Italian Job its place in history as an iconic car was secured.
With John Cooper's racing links, the Mini Cooper S was entered into the Monte Carlo Rally and with Paddy Hopkirk behind the wheel it went on to win on numerous occasions. After its rally achievements, the Cooper S took to the track in the saloon car championships.
40 years after its original launch the car has been re-invented and has a reputation as a sophisticated, small sporty car, which now proudly wears a BMW badge.
When looking to buy a Mini Cooper S the main thing to look out for is fakes. Sometimes standard Minis are dressed up to look like a Cooper, whilst Coopers are made to look like an `S'. The good news is that if you find an authentic car, you can still get Cooper parts. It is always a good idea to join the Mini Cooper Register.
