The first Porsche, the 356, was born in Austria on the 8th of June 1948. It was responsible for igniting the story of a legend amongst cars, while the 911 cemented it.
For the 356-001, it was a first show, first race and first win at the Innsbruck city race in 1948 in the 1100cc class. In 1951 the 356-002 brought Porsche an International fame at Le Mans 24hrs in 1100cc class that has not been stamped out yet. Light, lucky and quick, 52 units of the hand-made aluminium alloy 356s were produced in Gmund factory up until 1950 when the factory moved to Zuffenhausen where they were produced from steel. Production continued until 1965, by which time almost 80,000 356s rolled out of the factory.
While the original 356-001 may only be viewed in the Factory museum, owning its next-of-kin may be within your grasp. Although only half of the 356s produced exist today, you might be lucky enough to find one on the market without having to sell your house to obtain it.
Another rage amongst the 356 aficionados is the Convertible D. With more comfortable seats and roll-up windows, it was the city denizen's answer to the 356 Speedster who liked to race between traffic lights without having to compromise on comfort. Introduced in 1958, only 1,330 models were produced until the following year when production of the 356B took over. These highly covetable limited 'D' pieces have an ardent fan base willing to pay $100,000 for one in good condition. There is even a separate club for just Convertible D owners or fans.
Whether or not your Porsche 356 makes you a profit, it is highly unlikely that you will not find satisfaction in housing a legend in your garage.
