Advertising and Packaging

The 19th century saw the introduction of colour lithography. This enabled hundreds of perfect prints to be made from a single master and was a huge turning point in advertising and packaging.

Signs and packaging have been made from many different materials over the years including wood, tin, glass, canvas and even cardboard. Today there are many serious collectors of advertising, packets and tins from the past.

Over 500,000 signs and associated memorabilia, detailing more than 100 years of British life can be seen at the Robert Opie Collection in Wigan. Opie’s collection began in 1963 when he became interested in the origins and development of brands. By 1975 he had such an impressive collection that he staged an exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London entitled “The Pack Age; A Century of Wrapping It Up”. The show was such a success that in 1984 Opie opened his own museum and the Wigan Pier Experience offers you the chance to step back in time.

The internet, local auctions, boot fairs and antique shops are all good starting points to find these items. Reproductions are also popular among collectors and classic signs for brands such as Coca-Cola, Oxo and of course Pears are available today but these are far less likely to turn into investment material in the future.
