Clocks as an Investment

Clocks have been collectable since the early 17th Century and are still very popular today. They range in size, style and value considerably and thus have tremendous investment potential.

The maker, type of case, movement and condition will all have a bearing on the value of a clock. If you are a novice clock collector and are looking for a piece as an investment, opt for a clock that is in working order. Repairing clocks is a very specialised field and as such can be very time consuming and expensive.

There are numerous types of clocks available ranging from carriage clocks to bracket clocks and long case clocks to the more unusual skeleton clocks.

Bracket clocks vary in price, but perhaps the most valuable are pre 1700 ones. A Regency bracket clock, in a rosewood or mahogany case with a convex dial is worth in the region of £4,500. The value of the clock will increase if it is by a famous maker. A clock by Thomas Tompion, known as the father of English clock making, would cost in excess of £100,000.

Carriage clocks were nearly all made in France during the 19th and 20th Centuries. Engraved French carriage clocks are more valuable than their plainer sisters, with prices ranging from £2,000 - £3,000 for an engraved version and £1,000 - £1,800 for a plain clock. An English carriage clock can cost as little as a few hundred pounds up to several thousand for a quality clock.

Long case, or grandfather clocks, were mainly made in England in the late 17th to 19th Centuries. In terms of value, the smaller the long case clock is, the greater its value tends to be. Prices vary between £1,000 and £2,000.
