The range of items available to a collector of arms of militaria memorabilia is vast. Firearms, armour, medals, badges, edged weapons and uniforms are all collectable, be it for their historical interest or their high quality craftsmanship.
A full set of armour is extremely valuable and a great investment. Most pieces available today come from the 16th Century onwards, with such things as breast and back plates, gauntlets and lobster-tailed helmets being most sought after. A three-quarter armour from this period, in very good condition, is worth in the region of £8,000 to £10,000. Complete suits of armour are so rare that 19th Century reproductions are also highly collectable. A good quality suit will cost in the region of £5,000.
Antique firearms are also very popular. At £150 for a 19th Century flintlock pistol, they are also more affordable. An 18th Century example might cost you in the region of £300. Check whether you need a special licence.
Metal and fabric badges are becoming increasingly popular. The most sought after include officers’ headdress badges, which are larger than standard badges. Early 19th Century British regimental badges are also collectable and command prices between £100 to £400. Medals are still highly collectable with a rare group being worth up to £2,500.
Swords and dirks are also popular. Scottish regimental swords from the 19th Century can cost anywhere between £3,500 and £5,500. The decoration on a sword indicates the status of its original owner, the more decorative a piece is, the more it is worth. Less ornate swords can cost only a few hundred pounds.
