Collecting postcards has always been a popular hobby. Some of the rarest cards can cost hundreds of pounds, others just a few pence, which is one reason for their popularity.
Highly collectable postcards show scenes of social history; these are known as “topographical” or “topo” cards. Village views are of greater value than city scenes, as fewer copies were produced. Printed views of holiday resorts and well-visited locations cost pence, village scenes can cost several pounds, with “real photographic” views costing as much as £20. Transport is also popular, particularly ships, motoring and railways. Again prices range from a few pounds to around £50.
90% of post cards, regardless of how old they are, range in value from a few pence to £5. Whether or not the card has been through the post does not have any bearing on its value, however, stamps and postmarks all add interest to a card.
As with all investment collectables, condition is everything, most cards will be worthless if they are bent or creased. Collectable postcards tend to date between 1902–18, pre 1902 are rare and can be worth several hundred pounds. These cards can be distinguished by their lack of a divided back. Pre 1894 postcards are very desirable, as before this date they could not be sent through the post. At the peak of their popularity, millions would have been sent each week, a high proportion of which have become today’s collectables. The First World War dampened the popularity of postcards and it was not until the 1970s that cards became collectable once again.
