Many carpets and rugs are bought by serious collectors and can have enormous investment potential. Generally, rugs are small enough to hang on a wall and will be no more than 2m long; anything else is referred to as a carpet.
When valuing an antique rug the size, colour, design and quality of the knots all play an important role. The most collectable rugs are those that are handmade. Check the back of the rug; the design should be visible on both the back and the front. Part the pile and check the knots, if there are loops rather than knots this indicates that the rug is machine made and of no value to a serious collector.
The best-coloured rugs are those made from insect or natural vegetable dyes. Colour is perhaps one of the most important ways of evaluating the age of a rug. Indian, Persian and Chinese rugs have always been very popular. Currently, Indian rugs are the most collectable and may reach prices of £10,000 - £25,000.
A 19th century Chinese rug may cost between £3,000 and £5,000.Kilims are unlike rugs or carpets as they are flat woven with no pile or knots. Antique Kilims are softly coloured and finely woven. One from the late 19th century might cost in the region of £850.
