Textiles & Embroidery

Textiles have become very popular collectables in recent years. Although many items are too fragile to be used for their original purposes, many are now framed and used as decorative pictures.

Textiles came into their own in the 17th and 18th centuries, providing a source of warmth in draughty interiors. As houses became warmer and wallpaper became fashionable they went out of fashion, today, however they are very sought after.

It is the textiles fragile state that plays an important role in its potential investment value. Perhaps the most valuable pieces are English stumpwork. This is a type of raised embroidered picture from the 17th century. Even with restoration, a 17th century stumpwork picture could be worth between £1,500 and £2,000.

Textiles from the 19th and 20th centuries are far more widely available and are by nature more affordable.

European works from this period such as tapestries often reflect styles from an earlier period. If a whole tapestry is beyond your means, cushions and chair covers are often available at much more affordable prices. A quality piece from the 19th century could cost around £5,000.

Samplers are also a good investment. They are worked in brightly coloured silks and usually show the name of the person who made them and the date they were made. A good example could cost between £400 and £600.

Textiles are a tactile collectable and something you can enjoy as you watch your investment grow.
