When was the last time you had a rummage through the boxes hidden away in your loft? If you are lucky, you may find a box of toys stashed away from a long forgotten childhood. There is a huge number of toys with avid collectors including dolls, bears, tin soldiers, classic games, Victorian toys, Mecanno, Corgi, Hornby, Tri-ang, Barbie and Action Man collectibles, Disney to name but a few.
If you find such treasures tucked away, what should you do with them? Handle them carefully - finishes become delicate with age and over zealous cleaning can damage or even rub them off completely. Any restoration work should be left to the experts. The condition of the toy is all-important, as is how rare it might be. A boxed toy in mint condition will command the highest price.
Boxed toys will always sell for a premium, even a tatty box is better than no box at all, as it may still show the original patent number and year of copyright - collectors will frame parts of boxes to preserve them. Some people collect boxes for their comic art.
Collecting toys as an investment has become increasingly popular in recent years. As with all antiques, toy prices can go down as well as up, although generally speaking they are proving to be a sound investment.
If you are not lucky enough to find any collectible toys hidden away at home, how should you start your collection? As with all antiques, buy what gives you pleasure. This does not, however, mean that you won't have to do any research. In order to ascertain the current trends study adverts in your local newspaper, toy sale catalogues and visit local dealers.
Another tip is not to spread your interests too widely - specialise in areas that you think will give you the most enjoyment. To ensure your investment has the greatest growth potential buy toys that are priced according to rarity and condition - always buy the best you can afford, mint or near mint condition is a worthwhile investment.
