To a collector, sports memorabilia can have either a monetary or sentimental value.

Collectors will often look for a specific type of memorabilia, for example something that relates to a certain sports personality, club or type of sport.

Almost all sports are popular. Football, rugby, cricket, golf, tennis, boxing and motor sports are just a few. What type of things do people collect? Almost anything - shirts, shoes either new or worn, are very popular as are programmes, tickets, balls, signed photographs, the list is endless.

Signed shirts

Signed shirts of top players can currently be purchased for around £250 and a signed football will set you back around £150. Their value in the future can only be guessed at but what is now a memento of your favourite football hero could become a worthwhile investment, depending on how that player’s career develops.

World Cup memorabilia

In general though, the things most likely to fetch the highest prices in the future are items associated with particular events such as Geoff Hirst’s shirt worn in the 1966 world cup final which recently sold for nearly £100,000.

There are huge numbers of websites buying and selling every type of sports memorabilia you can think of. Auction houses are another good source and from time to time, Sotheby’s and Christies hold sports memorabilia sales.

Collecting sports memorabilia is becoming increasing popular and as well as providing a more interesting investment to traditional stocks and bonds, it could also prove to be more lucrative too.
