Investors sit tight as markets churn, survey finds

Tue, 19 Feb 2008

People are "un-phased by troublesome markets" and are happy to leave their investments alone for the time being, new figures show.

A study conducted by The Share Centre found that 58 per cent of people with investments in the stock market did not make any trades.

This showed that investors had not been "spooked into making rash decisions as it was simply not the right time for them to purchase or cash in on their investments", the survey reported.

It also found that 61 per cent of those with investments claim to have a comprehensive financial plan, something Andy Parsons, team manager at the company, believes is important.

He said: "A simple strategy is to ‘earmark’ certain savings investments for certain events and remembering not to access those monies until required.

"Failure to adopt these principles could mean hopes and dreams fade, whilst an increase in debt may potentially follow."

Last week James Parker of ODL Markets claimed that spread betting offered "the average man on the street" the chance to benefit from stock market falls.
