Petrol prices will boost ethical investments, expert claims

Tue, 08 Jul 2008

Increasing petrol prices are good news for those with ethical investments, according to one expert.

Mike Fox, trust fund manager at The Co-operative Investments, explained that as the cost of petrol increases, more and more people are looking to use public transport.

This means that investments in such companies are boosted as their performance improves, something which in turn helps ethical funds.

He said: "Commuters now have more than just environmental reasons to leave the car at home.

"The rising cost of filling up at the pumps is leading [an] increasing number of people to choose public transport to save money and it is good news for providers."

Mr Fox pointed out that investments in Arriva have delivered a return of 32.1 per cent over the three years to the end of May 2008.

He also believes the company is well positioned for further growth.

Last week, Andy Hammerton, spokesperson for Co-operative Financial Services, claimed that ethical investments are increasingly popular as people become more aware of issues such as climate change .
