ETFs can be good investments, expert claims

Wed, 08 Oct 2008

Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) could be a worthwhile investment in the current economic climate, it has been claimed.

According to Barbara-Ann King, head of proposition at Barclays Stockbrokers, the investments are becoming increasingly popular in the form of iShares, which account for 90 per cent of ETF traded on the London Stock Exchange .

She said: "iShares can be accessed at relatively low cost and offer the combination of portfolio diversification of a fund and the liquidity of a share, and for this reason are ideal for self directed investors ."

They can also make it easier for people to invest in markets which are difficult access via single stock selection, she added.

However, as ETFs are traded like shares they may not be suitable for everyone, especially as the value of an investment can go down as well as up.

Recently, Chris Palmer, head of Global Emerging Markets at Gartmore, claimed such countries will not be to badly hit by the current financial turmoil and will remain good long-term investments .
