Stock market still makes best investments, study finds

People remain sure that the stock market will be the best place for investments in the year ahead, it has been claimed.

A study by Barclays Stockbrokers found that 65 per cent of investors think that the asset class will provide the best returns in 2009.

This compares to 17 per cent who think that commodities will be the best investments, while 15 per cent picked gilts and bonds .

Barbara-Ann King, head of proposition at the investment firm, said: "Despite the market volatility experienced over the past year it is encouraging to see our clients retain their confidence in the stock market for this year."

Henk Potts, equity strategist at the company, added that although there is a "brutal" recession underway, equity markets will eventually recover and offer good investments .

Yesterday, Gigi Chan, the manager of Threadneedle's China Opportunities investment fund, claimed that government-backed projects should help boost equities in the Far East this year.
