Investing in Autographs

Book buying has always been one of Britain’s favourite hobbies and there are no signs that this is changing. The Internet, literary festivals and in store events have had a huge impact on the book market with more and more people buying first edition books as a form of investment.

What determines the value of a book? The first book by an author to appear in print, should that author then go on to become popular, can prove to be a sound investment. Whether a book is rare or the author popular, both play a part.

In 1997, Bloomsbury published a first novel by the author J.K. Rowling. Rowling. She had found it difficult to find a publisher and consequently only 300 copies of “Harry Potter & the Philosopher’s Stone” were issued. Today, this first edition is very rare and can be worth more than £10,000.

Books that have been televised or made into films can also increase in value. An example of this is the J.R.R. Tolkein trilogy “The Lord of the Rings”. Originally published in 1954/55, a set in mint condition may be worth in the region of £18,000 - £25,000.

Condition is all-important; a book should resemble its original state of publication and dust wrappers, if issued, should be in near mint condition.

As with all investments, the value of books can change. You will, however have the bonus of being able to touch and feel your investment.
