Investing in Coins

When coin collecting or numismatics (from the Greek nomisma – “standard”) actually began is difficult to pinpoint, although imperial coin collections have been found that date back to the middle ages. Coin collecting was originally a pursuit of the aristocracy, however today it is accessible to all.

Coin collecting is basically the hobby of acquiring coins, learning about them and storing them. There are many ways of increasing your collection including coin shops, shows, auctions (either online or in person), coins from the mint, metal detecting and foreign travel to name but a few.

Coins vary in price and many factors can affect their value, the precious metal market, the coin’s popularity, its age and rarity. Some coins such as krugerrands for example are not rare but have significant intrinsic value.

Most collectors will specialise in one field. They may prefer coins from a particular country, time period or even from a specific mint. Coins are graded, which means that such things as stains, scratches, dents and general condition all have a bearing on the value of the coin.

To keep coins in tip top condition they should be preserved from chemicals and humidity. Obviously if a collection is particularly valuable you should consider storing it in a safe or safety deposit box.

There are no guarantees for the return on your investment but building up your coin collection could be an enjoyable and interesting hobby. Your collection could then either be sold to realise your investment or passed on with your estate. If you would like advice about this, please complete a Quick Enquiry Form.
