Investing in Vintage Fashion

With leading Hollywood actresses now wearing vintage designer dresses to the Oscars, vintage fashion has never been so collectable or had so much investment potential. Top London department stores even have departments dedicated to vintage clothing and accessories.

Even if you don’t have a collection of your mother’s classic 1960’s frocks at the back of your wardrobe, despite leading stores getting in on the act, you can still pick up vintage clothing relatively cheaply. Charity shops are a good starting point, as well as specialist shops auctions and fashion fairs. Classic vintage items can also often be found at large antique markets.

Demand for different styles moves with current trends so if your collection is not in vogue right now, the chances are it probably will be again sometime in the future. Pre-World War II hand-made eveningwear is very sought after at the moment, as are all designer labels. An opera coat from the 1920s could cost you £500 whilst a beaded flapper dress from the same era could be as much as £750.

Many vintage accessories, shoes and jewellery are also becoming extremely collectable and are showing real investment potential. Handbags in particular are very much in demand and can fetch good prices. Look out for Prada, Hermes and British designer Lulu Guiness. And who knows – that Gucci bag that you felt guilty about spending all that money on could turn out to be an antique of the future!

Visiting the Victoria & Albert Museum in London or the Fashion and Textile Museum (FTM), the first UK museum dedicated to contemporary fashion and textiles, opened by Zandra Rhodes, is a wonderful way to gain inspiration and to get an idea of what might prove to be a sound investment.
