Investing in Vinyl Records

Recording sound has come on a long way since the early 1800s when English physician and naturalist Thomas Young recorded the vibration of a turning fork on a rotating drum covered with wax. Although Young could record sound, he had no way of playing it back. By the 1870s Thomas Edison had produced the first working phonograph that was able to both store and play back sound. 1904 saw the production of the first double-sided disks and after this progress was rapid. 1948 saw the release of the first commercial vinylite record and the 1960s became the golden age of vinyl.

The condition of collectable vinyl records is all-important and the first thing you need to understand is how their condition is graded. Near mint, excellent and very good are obviously the best types of records to look out for and this type of quality will usually be found through a specialist dealer. Not only are the records themselves graded, but also the record sleeves and any word sheets or posters.

So what makes a vinyl record a collectable investment? The artist, album, cover, general condition and whether the record is authentic or not all play an important part. Records in near mint or excellent condition can also be found on the Internet by looking at specialist dealers websites, whilst those in less good condition can be found at car boot sales and record fairs.

Values can vary greatly from a few pounds to many hundreds of pounds with a few very exceptional records having been worth thousands. 78s, 45s and LPs are all collectable, do your research. The Internet is a great starting point and specialist record collector magazines are also available.
