Property Abroad - Greece

A warm welcome awaits you in Greece with a combination of long hot summers and friendly people. Greece is therefore a fabulous place to invest in property. With its many international airports, excellent links to most European cities and a flight time of approximately three and a half hours from London Heathrow to Athens; Greece is highly accessible.

Compared with Spain and Portugal, Greece remains largely undeveloped. Strict rules are applied to development and renovation works, thus ensuring the charm and appeal of the whitewashed villages are not lost.

Renovating an old village house can prove to be quite an expensive project. Another alternative is to purchase a plot of land on which to build your dream home, but expect to pay a premium for a coastal location. EU nationals can stay in Greece for up to three months; any longer and you will need to apply for a residence permit. This will initially be issued on a six-month temporary basis, followed by a five-year permit.

The small islands clustered around the Greek coastline are very popular, with Crete being a favourite for those seeking year round sunshine. Pelopennese, on the mainland, is particularly popular with overseas buyers.

Greece is such a popular destination that the potential to earn rental income while you are not using your property is huge. This can be a useful way to cover costs.
