If you enjoy sun, seafood, olive groves, golf, fine wines and port then Portugal is for you.
Flights to Lisbon from the UK are plentiful with the journey taking about three hours. It is also possible to go by car, taking a ferry from Portsmouth or Plymouth to northern Spain, followed by a scenic drive on to Portugal.
If you are planning on staying in for less than three months you won't need a visa, however, if you are moving permanently, you will need a residence card.
In 1993 a new stringent planning law was introduced which ensures that properties are built in an in-keeping manner - this has tended to push up prices, but has the advantage of keeping the area unspoilt. It is still possible to find country properties to renovate and although prices tend to be higher than those in Spain, the properties are often of a better quality.
Perhaps the most popular area in Portugal is the Algarve in the south, with one of the best all year round climates in Europe. Cascais, the Obidos lagoon area and Estoril are all popular areas.
With its fantastic climate, rugged scenery, picturesque villages and numerous golf courses, Portugal is very popular with tourists from the UK. Portuguese property therefore has huge rental potential.
