Choosing where to invest

With so many fantastic destinations to choose from, deciding on just where your investment abroad should be is an enjoyable process. Getting it right to suit your needs is the key though so it's worth taking time to do the research first.

You may decide you would like to be right on the beach or have your own pool. Having a short journey time back to the UK may be important factor for some. You may prefer to buy a property that needs minimal work and maintenance or you may be looking for a huge renovation project. You may be hoping to become part of local village life or live far off the beaten track. Local language, schools, employment, year-round weather, scenery, transport and communication links or access to ski-slopes may be among the factors to consider.

 

It is also a good idea to be clear on exactly what sort of investment you are looking for. It may be intended to provide long term capital growth or rental income or it may become your permanent home after retirement when your property in the UK is then sold. Local property markets and demand for holiday lets in the area should always be carefully researched with long term or short term investment goals in mind. It may be difficult to find the perfect destination that meets all your requirements. There may be some things that you could compromise on so it is often a good idea to list your criteria and weight them in order of importance. You could get your partner to do this separately then compare answers to see how similarly (or otherwise) you both see your priorities. It's not an exact science but it can help as a starting point.
