Platinum is the third precious metal, next to gold on the periodic table, It is also one of the platinum metals, along with osmium, iridium, rhodium, palladium, and ruthenium.
Greyish-white in colour, platinum gets its name from the Spanish 'platina' meaning little silver. It is usually found as a compound with other metals in particular nickel and iridium.
Platinum can be found in many places around the world, however it is most prominent in Columbia, Russia, Peru, South Africa and Canada.
This precious metal has a number of uses aside from its use in jewellery, this includes being used in dental crowns, it is combined with cobalt to make magnets, as well as being a component of surgical tools and an element of anti-tumour agents.
