Silver is a rare metallic element found as a pure form or alloyed with other metals or minerals, it is often processed as a bi-product of the refinement processes of gold, copper and lead.
It is reported that silver is used more than any other commodity apart from petroleum in the world. Silver is used in many different industries including in jewellery, photographic film, medicine and electronics. It is said that the amount of silver that is being used in industry, is at a faster rate that it is being mined.
This could therefore make it rarer than gold.
It could therefore be argued that silver makes a fantastic investment opportunity as it is much cheaper than gold (despite the fact that historically they were traded at a ratio of 15:1 gold now sold at a premium of around 60:1) Additionally, it has been reported that there are only thirty more years of mining left. It would follow that an investment in silver can only grow.
Silver is found in largest amounts in Mexico, Chile, Australia, Serbia, Poland and Peru.
