Types of Wine for Investment - Bordeaux Region

Bordeaux is perhaps the finest wine region in the world. It produces wines to suit all pockets and tastes; good to exceptional wines, reds and whites, dry and sweet and Bordeaux wines can have fantastic investment potential.

Cabernet Sauvignon is the greatest red wine grape. To reach its best potential the grape needs to ripen late in a warm climate, in well-drained gravel. In wet years the variety can be rather sharp, but in dryer, sunnier years, the results can be very successful. Then aged for a year or two in oak barrels (called Bordeaux barrels or barriques bordelaises), the wine is among the best in the world.

Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc are the principle white grapes, which produce good dry wines. The Sauvignon grape, originally from the Loire valley, tends to be the most popular. In Bordeaux it has a rather earthy taste so it is usually mixed with other grape varieties.

There are many sub-regions within Bordeaux and many other famous wines come from the area but are referred to by their sub-region and which also have good investment potential. Graves, Sauternes, Pomerol, Medoc and St Emilion are some of the main wine-producing areas within Bordeaux. As a result of the production and ageing processes, Graves wines can improve for ten to twenty years which is ideal for those looking for wine for investment. Good Sauternes also need to be aged for seven or eight years and many are at their best after twenty years.

Bordeaux can be a good investment wine because it takes a long time to mature. By the time the wine reaches its peak it is more likely to be scarce and therefore more in demand. If you choose the correct vintage and château, buy the wine as soon as it's made (en primeur) and still in its barrel and have it shipped to the UK and stored correctly, Bordeaux offers great investment potential - in 1986 a single bottle of 1787 Château Lafite was sold for £105,000.

As with many types of investment, there are no guarantees that wine will make you a profit and a very small percentage of all wine produced will go on to increase in value.
