Types of Wine for Investment - Merlot Wine

Merlot grapes are closely related to those which produce Cabernet Sauvignon however the wine is often softer and warmer on the palate and is only moderately tannic. The Merlot grape produces a wine that is rich and dark with aromas of plum, chocolate, black cherry and toffee.

During the early 1970s, Californian growers began experimenting with the Merlot grape to try to add complexity to Cabernets. At the same time, winemakers found that the Merlot grape was of sufficient quality to produce fine wines in its own right.

Today, Merlot is becoming increasingly popular although it does not have quite the same provenance as a Cabernet Sauvignon. Merlot however is easier to care for and while having a similar ability to age, it matures more quickly than its cousin. Less patience is therefore needed while waiting for it to reach its peak however it may not always deliver the impressive investment returns of some of its relatives.

As with many types of investment, there are no guarantees that wine will make you a profit and a very small percentage of all wine produced will go on to increase in value.
