How do you find a reputable, vintage wine merchant?
Jim Budd, a freelance drinks journalist has been campaigning against wine fraud since 1996.
He has a website which offers information about bogus companies, together with advice for fraud victims. Budd's site lists 34 legitimate wine brokerage companies along with leading wine merchants. The Wine and Spirit Association also runs a voluntary code of practice for mail order and web based wine selling.
When buying fine wines, always make sure the bottles have been cellared correctly. If the wine has been traded several times already there is a chance that it has been exposed to light, heat and vibration all of which will affect the quality of the wine and of course its value.
Research current prices i.e. make sure the wine is not overpriced. It is possible that the wine could be a counterfeit and would therefore be worthless. There have been many dubious wines on the market and there is even a trade in empty vintage wine bottles from restaurants! Always make sure that your wine is insured to its full replacement value.
